Tess Felix: Portrait Artist

excerpt from Tess Felix

Tess Felix: Portrait Artist

Total run time: 9 minutes

After a major storm, Tess Felix found her local beach covered in plastic debris, making her aware of the magnitude of the plastic pollution in the ocean. Tess’s art form shifted that day. She began to assemble large portraits of her eco heroes from the plastic she collected on the beach. In making these portraits, she not only creates beautiful works of art from items such as discarded plastic toys, lighters, and empty water bottles, but also reminds the viewer of the throwaway culture we live in. Her hope is to inspire us to change our habits and ask ourselves, “How much plastic do we really need to use?”

Plastic Pollution

For Teachers and Students
Plastic Pollution Educational Resources for at Home Learning

This resource helps children learn about the impact of human activity—particularly plastic waste on our planet’s oceans. This site also lists several organizations that offer a variety of engaging educational materials on plastic pollution and oceans.

National Geographic education: This website is an  excellent resource of activities, lessons, articles, and videos for students K–12.

Plastic Pollution Coalition: This organization is working with students nationally to reduce the use of plastic on college campuses. This link provides information on how to get this initiative on your college campus.

5 Gyres: This PDF is a downloadable curriculum and activity guide. Students create a simulated landfill environment to understand how household/school waste breaks down in a landfill and learn ways to reduce and reuse.
